flootzavut Loved this song already, but seeing it performed live was absolutely spine tingling. Gorgeous, thought provoking lyrics, and Alice's vocals are as always absolutely incredible.

about

‘Witch’, Alice says "Witch was written
around the myth of Eros and Psyche through the lens of my own experience exploring my non-binary identity. From the starting point of doing drag at night to safely and privately experiment with the performance of gender (I was a boy again), this in my mind resonated with the scene of Eros asking Psyche not to look upon him when he
was with her in the evenings; he could not safely let her know him. In fact, the story in which their love is not left in peace due to who they are is inherently part of the queer experience both historically and today.

The idea then of love driving us to uncharacteristic or unsafe actions, and the determination with which we dive into such situations for true happiness, is the spirit that underlines the rest of the song. The journey Psyche undertakes to earn godhood and the right to marry Eros is one she cannot complete alone.”

lyrics

I was a Witch. I transform in the moonlight,
Oh, I was a boy again.
I was in love. I was in love?
I was in love.

Though I was a Witch, I was born in the daylight, the light is where I live.
I was in love. I was in love? I was in love.
I was in love. I was in love? I was in love.

You said “I saved you! I saved you!
And this is how you repay?
You’d do anything for love!
Do anything for love!

You know I held you so tenderly,
wrapped the fabric tight around me,
‘cause the blue won’t show enough.
Do anything for love!”

Industry made ghosts in my room,
Awake at night and all I need is you!
Aphrodite got me confused!
O what’s a poor boy to do ?

I was a Witch. I transform in the moonlight,
Oh, I was a boy again.
I was in love. I was in love?
I was in love.

Though I was a Witch, I was born in the daylight, the light is where I live.
I was in love. I was in love? I was in love.
I was in love. I was in love? I was in love.
